The world of Grand Theft Auto is expanding.

Rockstar Games unveiled Grand Theft Auto Online, launching Oct. 1 and free with copies of their upcoming action title Grand Theft Auto V.

The online component features a "dynamic and persistent online world" hosting up to 16 players. Similar in some respects to massively multiplayer online games, allowing players to work alone or with friends to complete missions or participate in random activities.

Players can also customize their characters' appearance, purchase vehicles and property and beef up experience through missions.
